Improve our listening skill by watching movie

Abstract
English is difficult subject to be learned  by Indonesian’s students. Some students must get a private course to improve their English ability, because learning in school sometimes students don’t understand what is explained by the teacher, so the teacher must speak twice. Many methods are useful to improve their English, as like watching movie. It helps us to understand what speakers means in the movie. It is watch by no native subtitle. Watching movie will increase the ability to understanding the form, phrase, and what the point in conversation is. Beside that can imitate the pronounciation the students.
Introduction
Watching movies is a great way to improve your English, especially your listening skills. Film are not usually created for English learners, they are made for native english speakers. Therefore, the language is exactly how you hear it in real life, it is spoken quickly, with native accent and pronounciation and using many idioms and expression. A lot of English learners watch movie with subtitle. Some people use English subtitles, other people use subtitles in their native language. It doesn’t matter what kind of subtitle for use. Watching movies with subtitles is a really bad way to improve your listening. If we are watching film with no subtitle, we will focus to hear what the character says in the film, that way make us to focus to listen carefully. We must practice more, if we want our listening skills improve.
Background of listening
Active listening requires that we listen to not only for the content of the speakers messages, but more importantly for the intent and feeling of the message as well
Bellota, Claudia (2012) said that most people don’t listen as effectively as they think and probably don’t know it. While most people agree that listening is a very important skill, most people don’t feel a strong need to improve their own skill level. Listening is the earliest communication skill acquired, the most often used.
Newkirk and linden (1982) present a system that examines three specific listening ; time wasters, dissonance reducers, and active listeners. Time wasters which is not bad itself, however they can lose control and tune all speakers out. Dissonance reducers attempt to deal with internal conflict they encounter from new information received, that is inconsistent with their existing attitudes. Active listeners listen with a greater degree of sensitivity. They must not only understand the content of the message but also the speaker’s feeling.
Listening is not same as hearing
In my opinion, hearing refers to the sounds that you hear, whereas listening requires more than, listening need to focus. Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, the use of language and voice. In other words, it means being aware of both verbal and non-verbal message. Your ability to listen effectively depends on the degree to which your perceive and understand these message.
Method
This method based on my experience, the subject is in UNISKA ( Universitas Islam Kediri ) English department 2014-2015 academic year, focused on improving listening skill. Our lecturer give us short movie with English speakers that we never seen before, with no subtitle. Our lecturer ask us to watch the movie, sure with listen to understand the content and the message in movie. As the result we get in the first try the speakers talk very fast, difficult to get the message. But if we are never stop trying we will easy to understand that with listen carefully and focus. You will hear English being used in a very natural way. Some parts may be spoken too fast for you to understand but it will be a perfect way for you to get used to hearing native speakers talk to each other. You will also hear informal English and slag words and phrases that you often do not find in books or dictionaries. We all know that English pronunciation is extremely difficult and when you read words it is hard to know how they should be said. Hearing native English speakers talk to each other will help you to hear how words are pronounced. If you are using English subtitles, you will also be able to see how the words are written.
Conclusion
Whatever your level of English is, you might be tempted to switch on subtitles. If so, I would recommend using English subtitles so you can read along while you are listening. Of course, if watching a film in English and reading English subtitles is too difficult, you should start by watching films with subtitles in your language.
